Understanding your (S:) drive and (U:) drive storage on the Town Server

The Falmouth IT Department (FIT) has implemented a data storage option that provides all users the ability to manage how Data is stored.

FIT created two drives, one is named S: for “Shared” and the other is U: for “You”.

Both drives reside on the town’s server.  FIT backs up the server nightly to help reduce the possibility of data loss. Participating in the use of this storage option will afford you the security from data loss in the event of a catastrophic failure of your computer.

Keeping your data on either of the drives is no harder than when you store data on your local computer. As with anything new, it will require an adjustment period to be conscious of storing data to the drives.

FAQ:

Why should I stop saving data to my local computer (C:) drive?

  • Data saved to the C: drive is at risk of being lost due to the following factors: Viruses, Malware, Hard Drive Failure, System Failure, Software corruption, among others.

Who can see the information on the S: drive?

  • Each department has their own S: drive. The information placed on this drive is only accessible to the employees in that department.

Who can see the information on the U: drive?

  • Each user has their own U: drive. The information placed on this drive is only accessible to the user named on the drive.

How do I access the drives?

  • Open File Explore and look under “This PC” or “Network Locations”. The drive labeled S: and U: should be present. If you do not see them, restart your computer and check again. Contact FIT if they do not appear after the restart.

How do I move data to the drives?

  • Locate and select the information you want to move. Copy the information. Open the S: drive or the U: drive and paste the information. Return to the original location of the data that you copied and delete the information to prevent redundant files.

What happens when I delete an item from either drive?

  • There is no recycle bin on the server. If you delete an item, you will not be able to recover it unless the item was on the server overnight.

Can I recover the deleted data?

  • If you delete an item that has been on the server, overnight or longer, immediately contact the IT Department. You will need to provide - when you deleted it, the name of the file, and when it was created.

Why move off the town shared drive?

  • This drive is also on the server but everyone that has access to this drive can access your information, unless the folder is marked Private. Due to the amount of users accessing the drive, relocation or deletion of data may accidentally occur.
