Apple products such as the iPhone, iPad, or MAC may receive email attachments as WINMAIL.DAT files. This solution is not to explain how or why they arrive this way, but to assist you with being able to open them. Just know that these files are the result of how they are sent and not an issue with the receiving equipment.

What is in this solution:

Option 1: Opening email with a browser other than Sifari or Mail APP

Option 2: Downloading an App to save and open the file

Option 1

Opening email with a browser other than Sifari or Mail APP

  • Open a browser such as Chrome. If you don’t have it on your phone go to the APP store to download (free).
  • Once the browser is open navigate to your email account by entering mail.falmouthma.gov in the browser’s navigation bar.
  • Enter your email address, FirstName.LastName@falmouthma.gov, falmouthfirema.gov, or falmouthpolicema.gov
  • Enter your password for the email account
  • Open the email with the attachment. Click on the attachment

Option 2

Downloading an App to save and open the file

  • Exit Mail APP in the IOS (close email on phone)
  • Click on the icon for the APP store and click on magnifier located at the lower right of the window (search).
  • Enter "TNEF’S Enough" in the search bar
  • Follow the directions to download the APP

Once the APP is installed proceed with the following steps:

  • Re-Launch Mail APP and open the email containing the winmail.dat attachment file
  • Tap on the “winmail.dat” attachment and in the pop-up window choose “Copy to TNEF’s Enough”
  • If the file is readable the APP will open in IOS and show a list of items contained within the winmail.dat
