Bitwarden + Duo: Quick Start Guide

Town of Falmouth IT Department

Welcome to Bitwarden! This tool will help you securely manage your passwords while making it easier to log in to Town services.

1. Your First Login

Because we use Single Sign-On (SSO), you do not need to create a new username.

  1. Go to vault.bitwarden.com or open the browser extension/mobile app.

  2. Enter your Town Email Address and click Continue.

  3. Select Enterprise Single Sign-On.

  4. Log in using your standard Town credentials and approve the Duo Push on your device.

2. The Master Password (Your Vault Key)

Even though you use Duo to log in, Bitwarden will ask you to create a Master Password during your first setup.

  • What it does: This password acts as a "key" to securely encrypt your vault.

  • IT cannot see it: Because of Bitwarden’s security model, IT does not have access to this password.

  • The Golden Rule: Choose something strong but memorable. If you forget it, please contact IT immediately so we can utilize Account Recovery to help you regain access.

3. Key Features for Your Workflow

  • Browser Extension: Install the Bitwarden extension (Chrome/Edge) to have it automatically "fill in" passwords for you as you browse.

  • Mobile App: Access your work passwords securely on your mobile device.

  • Password Generator: Use the built-in generator tool to create long, complex passwords for new accounts so you never have to reuse a password again.

4. Security Policies to Know

To keep Town data safe, the following policies are automatically enforced:

  • SSO Required: You must use your Town login and Duo to access your vault.

  • Vault Timeout: Your vault will automatically lock after a period of inactivity to prevent unauthorized access.

  • Single Organization: Your work Bitwarden account is restricted to Town of Falmouth use only.
